Online Counselling

You may be familiar with online working and meetings or this may be new to you. Online counselling has been proven to be very effective, but it is different to face to face in several ways. This post is to help you get the most out of your sessions.

The first thing to decide is which device you are going to use for the meeting, it can be your phone, a tablet, laptop, or desktop pc. Ensure whichever device you are going to use has all the updates installed so that your machine is protected from viruses. Make sure you have a power connection and that your battery is fully charged – video conferencing can use more power than a phone call.

It’s useful to have an alternative method of communication, such as a mobile phone where you can be contacted if the connection or first choice of the device fails. Use a secured wifi signal & try to avoid using a public wifi service. Ensure the room you are going to use is private, comfortable, and has a good wifi connection, with no chance of you being disturbed. It may be a good idea to bring a drink, a notepad a pen and some tissues to the room with you.

Prior to your appointment, you will be sent a link that you may click for on-screen instructions on how to join the ‘meeting’. On some devices it will ask you to download an app, so do follow the instructions & it will bring you to our ‘meeting room’. (Don’t worry if this takes you a few minutes the first time – it will be quicker next meeting). The counsellor will start the meeting as close to “time” as possible and if you are running late, we would be grateful if you could kindly let us know. At the bottom of your screen, you should see a list of options that allow you to mute your mic or turn off your camera. The counsellor always set the meeting up so that these are turned on when we enter the meeting but if they can’t hear you or you them, this is where we can solve those problems.

Most devices have a built-in mic and camera which will be more than enough for our meeting – counsellors use earphones to ensure the best privacy, so you may want to consider this too. It can be helpful to have somewhere to place your device so that you do not have to hold it, and so that you can see the counsellor clearly. If we lose connection, the counsellor will contact you on the number you have provided. In our first session, the counsellor will talk about how we will work and how the counsellor will ensure your safety.

As with our face-to-face sessions, the counsellor will be responsible for timings and will aim to let you know circa 5-10 minutes prior to the end of our session so we are prepared for the session ending and so we may organise the next appointment where applicable. Payment for online sessions is preferable prior to the meeting and details of how to pay will be sent to you.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is a process that offers you the opportunity to explore issues that may be causing you concern or distress. During these times of distress, you may experience feelings and emotions that seem difficult to cope with alone. These issues may have bothered you for some time or maybe the result of a recent event, crisis, or loss.

Counseling is a very individual experience. Some people come for a few sessions, and others come over a longer period of time. Some people are very clear about what areas in their lives they want to explore. Other people feel less clear about where to start and what they need to do.

How can counselling help?

Counselling can support you through these difficult times. It is very important that you feel able to talk about whatever you want to talk about within the counselling relationship.

I offer a therapeutic relationship based on confidentiality, respect, and trust. The counselling relationship that I offer can enable you to find a greater understanding of your own particular experiences, whatever they may be, within a safe and confidential environment.

Through mutual respect and trust, counselling can enable you to gain greater control over life’s challenges, so that you can find a way forward that feels right for you.

Counselling in South Wales

I provide counselling and psychotherapy for individuals and couples. Our sessions are held via telephone or online platforms like Zoom. Our face-to-face therapy sessions are based in Maesteg, South Wales.

For many people, the idea of speaking to a therapist can be intimidating or even frightening. Essentially professional counselling and psychotherapy is a conversation in a safe environment with a trained listener who can help you, as a couple or an individual, explore the troubling areas that have brought you to therapy.

I have a wide range of experience working with many problems, for example, depression, anxiety, grief, relationship issues, stress, and addiction. You don’t need to start with a clear idea of what the issue is, you might be unsure. I can help you explore your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and how you are experiencing your life right now, and when appropriate look at pain from the past and how you would like to shape your future.

Our work can be tailored to a short-term solution-focused approach or a longer-term deep psychological one, depending on your needs. The client’s interests are at the heart of all our therapeutic work. I provide a safe, confidential environment for you to explore, with the support you need from a professional, qualified and experienced therapist.

My counselling therapy is available to anyone over 16, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion. It involves meeting with a therapist for a session in a safe therapeutic setting (currently either online or by telephone) which lasts for 50 minutes. The number of sessions will vary depending on your particular needs.

Let’s chat about counselling.

Counselling involves attentive listening to you and your problematic situation. The ‘listening’ involves hearing what you say, how you say it, and who you are in the story of the problem. The very nature of this will enable you to see your situation more clearly and help you find a way ahead that is right for you. I do this in a non-judgemental compassionate way so that, throughout the process, you will feel more empowered in your problematic situation and in your life.

Stress management involves counselling skills to enable me to ‘hear’ your story around your stress and how it affects you. I then use different exercises along with my listening skills, to help you find better ways of supporting yourself in your life, leading to a greater sense of personal well-being.

Personal well-being clients who come looking for ways of living a more meaningful life (according to their own sense of what is meaningful to them) will have access to all the above skills and I will introduce a more meditative way of ‘being’ and a more connected way of living with themselves and life.

I offer online and telephone counselling by appointment. I believe that it is the partnership built between the client and the counsellor or therapist which creates the basis of the helping relationship and provides an environment that is safe, supportive, and challenging.

I consider the client as an expert in their own life. I offer an exploratory first meeting where you can discuss whatever concerns you have, before deciding about further sessions. My service is flexible in terms of number of sessions. Sessions last 50 minutes and are usually weekly at a fixed time.
